English Language Learners
Students in the ESL classes have an opportunity to perfect their use of English over one-two-three-four semesters - depending on their readiness for conventional English. They have ample opportunities to make and sustain new friendships by being with similar students in one class for more than one semester.
Those who stay in ESL for four semesters, earn four credits while having opportunities to participate in field trips to Queens Park, City Of Brampton, Peel recycling facilities, Claireville Conservation Area, Forks of the Credit River Conservation Area, Mount Chinguacousy Ski Hill, Silvercreek Outdoor Educational Centre and/or Crawford Lake Conservation Area.
Because the ESL classes are multi-level and multi-age, students have the chance to meet and befriend classmates from outside their age group and level of ability. This fosters the understanding of the diversity of talents, abilities, cultures, and attitudes under the unifying umbrella of learning about and appreciating Canada. The socio-cultural aspect of ESL classes is to help students find their path in the challenging experience of adapting to a new school, language, culture, climate, and life situation in a new environment.
ESl newcomer students are connected with our school’s settlement worker from the Brampton Neighbourhood Resource Centre, who meets with them once a week, arranges presentations on topics relevant to being well in a new environment, and accompanies the students on field trips.
