Mission Statement
ARD endeavours to support those students who are identified as exceptional, those supported by an IEP, those with significant medical challenges, and English Language Learners.
The mission of the Academic Resource department is to ensure that St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic S.S. remains an educational environment where Resource students are treated with dignity and respect. Resource students, and their genuine efforts to contribute, must be viewed as being of equal worth to that of their peers. ARD is committed to supporting student learning and to preparing the Resource student for post-secondary opportunities.
The Resource department will maintain an exceptional degree of competence in supporting students, staff, and the school community. Information regarding appropriate supports available for ARD students and their families must be readily accessible to those who enquire. ARD will effectively collaborate with educators to develop a support plan for students which is equitable, appropriate, and just. The Resource department will endeavor to resolve educational challenges in a just manner.
The legal rights of an exceptional student must be respected. It is the mission of the ARD department to respect the Resource student’s legal right to confidentiality of information and to maintain all documentation about ARD students in an organized manner and in a secure location. It will endeavor to stay current with Ministry and Board policies – actively promoting those policies which support effective instructional and evaluative practices of ARD students, in particular.
ARD’s mission is to inspire confidence in others that we will effectively support the school community with matters related to Special Education and ELL. We will endeavor to provide regular, on-going communication between home and school, in a timely manner. We will assist educators with providing appropriate accommodations for Resource students in the learning environment.
We will not provide any accommodation which would place any student at an unfair advantage, over others. The accommodations provided at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic S.S. will be consistent with those offered board-wide, and in post-secondary institutions.
We recognize, ultimately, that every student is a child of God, created in His image, and that it is our Christian duty to be of service to others in a Christ-centred manner.
