What is a Learning Disability?
Well, we're so glad that you asked!
At Aquinas, we believe that the term "disability", used to describe potential learning challenges, is a bit of a misnomer.
When one thinks of a learning "disability", one might imagine that a person has some form of limitation, or inability, to learn.
This is simply NOT so!
At Aquinas, our school community understands that a person with a learning disability simply has a learning style preference.
When a student learns to work with their learning style preference, they discover that they really can reach any goal that they have set for themselves.
The key to success is to learn about how a student learns best, and then to teach and assess the student according to their learning strengths.
With this new understanding in mind, it would be more appropriate to consider a learning challenge
- NOT as a disability -
but as a learning style preference,
or a learning exceptionality.
The Learning Process
The learning process can be quite complex. A student with a diagnosed Learning Disability, may experience challenges with one or more areas of learning.
Kindly refer to the learning process chart below, for some insight into the myriad of ways in which a student may experience challenges with learning.
